Designing a 70s poster

Final Image Preview

Before we get started, let’s take a look at the image we’ll be creating.

In this tutorial you will need the "Felis Faber Fima effects pack" plugin (Learn more...)(Download).

Step 1

For this tutorial, set up a “Photo -> Landscape, 4 x 6” canvas at 300dpi.

Step 2

Alright, now let’s create new project to define new pattern.

Select square area with the “Rectangular Marquee Tool” (M) as on the image below

Invert selection

While still having the marquee selection active, paint with black color (G)

Press “Ctrl + D” to deselect the image. Then go to “Edit > Define Pattern…” and apply the name shown below.

Ok, now close “Grid Pattern” project without saving.

Step 3

Go to “Layer -> New Fill Layer -> Pattern” for the main project.

Press "ОК", then use the settings shown below:

Go to “Layer -> Rasterize -> Layer”.

Step 4

Paint “Background” layer with black color. Double click the "Pattern Fill 1" layer and give it a “Gradient Overlay” with the following settings as well.

You will get something similar to the image below.

Step 5

Press "Ctrl+Shift+N" to create a new layer. Name it «Tile»

Reset colors and go to «Filter -> Render -> Clouds».

Go to "Filter -> Pixelate -> Mosaic" and apply “Cell Size” setting to “50”.

“50” isn't casual.  You should set the “Cell Size” according to “Pattern Fill 1” cell size so that it will fit in the grid. It will be easier to do this using low “Opacity” for the “Tile” layer.

You will get something similar to the image below.

Step 6

Go to “Filter -> Scetch -> Reticulation” with the following settings:

“Density” = 0,

“Foreground Level” = 30,

“Background Level” = 2.

Step 7

Click"Ок" button. Set foreground color to white and background color to black.

Go to “Filter -> Scetch -> Photocopy” for the “Tile” layer with the following settings:

“Detail” = 24,

“Darkness” = 3

Duplicate the “Tile” layer (Ctrl + J or “Layer -> Duplicate Layer…”).

While having the “Tile copy” layer selected, go to “Filter -> Blur -> Gaussian Blur”, set “Radius” = 16,0

Set the “Tile copy” Layer Style to "Linear Dodge (Add)".

Merge “Tile copy” and “Tile” layers together and name the new layer "Tile."

Step 8

Double click the "Tile" layer and give it a “Color Overlay” with the following settings

Color: «#7777d3», Blend Mode: «Color», Opacity: 60%.

Step 9

Now we’ll make some transformation for both “Tile” and “Pattern Fill 1” layers. Select “Tile” and “Pattern Fill 1” layers, then press "Ctrl+T" (or "Edit -> Free Transform"). Select the “Perspective” transform method.

Shift bottom right corner to the right on 400%.

Press “Enter” button. Now, you should resize “Tile” and “Pattern Fill 1” layers.

Press “Enter” button.

Step 10

Make some changes to the “Pattern Fill 1” layer style.

Set the “Tile” layer style to "Linear Dodge (Add)".

Step 11

Hide the “Tile” layer. Also, while having “Fill Pattern 1” layer selected, select the “Magic Wand Tool” (W) and select some various cells, holding "Shift".

Select the “Tile” layer and make it visible. Invert selection (“Shift+Ctrl+I” or “Select -> Inverse”). Then press “Delete” button to erase unwanted areas.

You will get something similar to the image below.

Step 12

Create new group for “Tile” and “Fill Pattern 1” layers. Name it “Grid”.

It’s time to add stars. Create new layer “Stars” in front of the “Background” layer.

Reset the colors.

Fill the “Stars” layer with black #000000. Then go to “Filter -> Scetch -> Reticulation”.

Ok, now go to “Image -> Adjustments -> Levels…” (“Ctrl+L”).

You will get something similar to the image below.

Step 13

Create new layer “Fog”, then go to “Filter -> Render -> Clouds”.

Create new layer “Color gradient”.

Select the "Gradient tool" (“Radial Gradient”).

Set the “Color gradient” layer style to "Color". Merge “Color Gradient” and “Fog” layers together and name the new layer "Fog."

Set the “Fog” Layer Style to "Overlay", Opacity: 50%. Merge “Fog” and “Stars” layers together.

Step 14

Create a layer mask for the “Stars” layer (“Layer -> Layer Mask -> Reveal All”). Reset gradients.

Then, position your cursor in the downward of the grid and click-and-drag upward to the middle to add the gradient on layer mask.

You will get something similar to the image below.

Step 15

Now, it’s time for some really cool stuff. Create a new layer “Light” in front of the “Stars” layer. Using “Ellipse Tool”, make something like this.

Add some big red rectangle on the same layer.

Create two duplicates of the “Lights” layer.

Apply “Filter -> Blur -> Gaussian Blur…” for the “Lights copy” layer with "90", for the “Lights copy 2” layer with “70” and for the “Lights” layer with "25". Merge all three layers.

Step 16

Create new layer and name it “Fog”. Select red color as the foreground and black as the background color.

Now, while having the “Fog” layer selected, go to “Filter -> Render -> Clouds”.

Create a layer mask “Layer -> Layer Mask -> Reveal All”. Then, position your cursor in the middle of the image and click-and-drag to the right to add the gradient on the layer mask.

Invert the layer mask (Ctrl+I).

Merge “Lights” and “Fog” layers together and name the new layer "Lights."

Set the “Light” Layer Style to "Linear Dodge (Add)". Opacity: 80%.

Step 17

Add a new layer to the “Grid” group. Name the new layer “Shine”. Using “Ellipse Tool”, make something like this. Color: “#7777d3”.

Erase the top part of the ellipse. Then go to “Filter -> Blur -> Gaussian blur”, set the blur to 15,0. Set the “Shine” layer style to "Hard light".

Add a new layer to the “Grid” group. Name the new layer “Spotlight”. Go to “Gradient Editor”, use the settings shown below:

Add the “Radial Gradient” gradient to the “Spotlight” layer.

Transform the “Spotlight” layer (Ctrl + T).

Invert colors in the “Spotlight” layer (Ctrl+I). Set the “Spotlight” layer style to “Multiply”.

Step 18

Create a new group. “Logo”. “Layer -> New -> Group”.

Place text, using the “Horizontal Text Tool” (T). Font type: “Times New Roman”, font size: “12”, align: “Center”.

Double click the "FELIS" layer and give it a “Color Overlay” with the following settings as well.

Duplicate the “FELIS” layer and then rasterize the new layer.

Now, while having the “FELIS copy” layer selected, go to “Filter -> Blur -> Radial Blur”.

You will get something similar to the image below.

Convert the “FELIS copy” layer to the “Smart Object”, “Layer -> Smart Objects -> Convert to Smart Object”. Then, using “Free Transform” (Ctrl + T), resize the blurred text.

Create a layer mask “Layer -> Layer Mask -> Reveal All” for the “FELIS copy” layer. Add gradient as shown below.

You will get something similar to the image below.

Rasterize the “FELIS copy” layer. Merge “FELIS” and “FELIS copy” layers together, name the new layer “FELIS”. Apply “Felis Faber -> Dream Glow” (Learn more...)(Download) filter to the “FELIS” layer.

Double click the "FELIS" layer and give it an “Inner Shadow” with the following settings as well.

Using the technique described above, add “FABER” text and the logo.

Step 19

Create a new layer. Name it “Spotlight”.

Using “Radial Gradient”, add gradient to the “Spotlight” layer.

Invert colors in the “Spotlight” layer (Ctrl+I). Set the “Spotlight” layer style to “Multiply”. Opacity: 30%.

Holding “Ctrl” click on the “LOGO” layer icon, then holding “Ctrl+Shift” click on “FELIS” and ”FABER” layers icons.

Invert selections "Shift+Ctrl+I" (or Select -> Inverse). Then press “Delete” button to erase unwanted areas.

Step 20

Create a new group “Images” behind the “Spotlight” layer. Past some image to a new layer in the “Images” group. Using “Edit -> Transform -> Distort”, place the image as shown below.

Using the technique described above, add some images on the grid.

Step 21

Merge all images together and name new layer “Images”. Then, go to “Felis Faber -> Color Temperature” (Learn more...)(Download), while having the “Images” layer selected.

Set this style setting for the “Images” layer.

Color for “Inner Glow” and “Outer Glow” is “#7777d3”.
